Scouting in the North of Tasmania, began in the second decade of the twentieth century, and has undergone a number of changes since that time. Launceston West Tamar District was named in 1994, when Launceston Central District, West Tamar and Esk, became Launceston West Tamar District. Three districts now exist in the north of the state to support Scout groups. In addition to Launceston West Tamar District - Launceston North and North Midlands.

The Launceston West Tamar District has eight groups and one Rover Crew. Groups cover the sections from Joeys through to Venturers. Rovers meet on a regional basis at the Harry Abbot Scout Centre, High Street. Most groups are land based although two groups, Tamar and Trevallyn, are Sea Scout groups and place a larger emphasis on water activities, although all groups do very similar activities.
